For the Executive Meeting our rendezvous was Llangollen and as usual a full weekend
was made of it. Saturday morning was bright as a dozen or so of us congregated outside
the Youth Hostel. As the ‘Wayfarer Weekend’ had been held at far-off Broome the annual
trip over the Nant Rhwl Wilym had been missed, so by consensus this was made the
day’s objective. We looped round an old river meander - now high and dry - to the
edge of Llangollen, where we found the start of direct track to Glyn Ceiriog, with
its 1000ft climb to the watershed. Now thoroughly warmed up the descent to Glym was
accomplished with much squealing of brake blocks and discs. The shops in Glyn were
patronised for lunch supplies, then we all trooped across the road to the cafe -
this with not five miles under our belt!
The run up the Ceirog brought us to Llanarmon, scene of many a refreshment halt after
a west-east traverse of the Berwyns, but today we carried straight on up the little
side valley and soon left tarmac behind. Lunch was taken beside the track, the weather
still perfect with no sign of the threatened rain. Carrying on we reached the Wayfayer
Memorial and entered our signatures in the book. Westward the distant peaks of the
Arenigs and Rhinogs stood out in the clear air. An easy run now brought us back down
to Cynwd, and the byway across the Dee from Corwen to Llangollen.
